Salary and Benefits

Salary and Incentive Practices
Pharmacy Technicians at UAB enjoy a competitive salary. Start salaries are based on experience and new technicians may qualify for a performance-based step program during their first two years of employment. Pharmacy Technicians are paid hourly and shift differentials are available for those who work evening or night shift. Pharmacy Technicians are also strongly encouraged to become nationally certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) to promote salary and professional growth.

Retirement Programs
The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama (TRS) is a defined pension benefit plan (a specific benefit available upon retirement.) Mobility for the Pharmacy Tech
With more than 50 patient-care units, a large central pharmacy, 16 decentral pharmacy satellites and 3 ambulatory (retail) pharmacy settings, the Pharmacy Technician has multiple options for mobility. Whether you simply want a change or to learn something new, you have the opportunity as a Pharmacy Technician at UAB.

Continuing Education
Pharmacy Technicians are required to be registered with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy. In order to maintain registration the technician must obtain three (3) hours of continuing education each year with one (1) hour being a "live" credit hour. These CE hours must be earned each calendar year. Pharmacy Technicians at UAB Hospital are provided with many free CE opportunities.

At UAB, we offer programs throughout the year which allow pharmacists and technicians to obtain live CE hours on-site with no fee. Speakers include Pharmacists, Physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Presentations address disease states and treatment options, pharmacotherapy updates, new drugs, Joint Commission issues, Pharmacy Resident research, and a variety of topics of interest to our staff.
