Why I came to UAB
I enjoy the environment in a teaching hospital, where there are always opportunities for learning, cutting edge research drives clinical decisions, and there is truly a team feel for the best patient care. In the large hospital setting you have the opportunity to see a wide range of disease states and still have access to specialist.
One thing I would tell a pharmacist interested in UAB
UAB's department of pharmacy is a wonderful place to work, full of challenges and plenty of support for overcoming the challenges. We have great benefits, competitive salaries, wonderful tech support, access 24hrs a day to our drug information center and colleagues with years of experience! Your coworkers at UAB will invest themselves with a genuine desire for optimal patient outcomes.
Tell about one event while working at UAB that has changed you
We always try to treat each patient as we would our own family member. One day I came to work and a close family friend was in our intensive care unit. This experience of caring for a friend helped to point out the shock incurred by family members having to make important decisions for their loved ones on issues in which they are not well read. Trust in UAB's staff and facilities plays a big role in their comfort level with the decisions they are often forced to make.
What are some characteristics of a UAB pharmacist?
We all have a little bit of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), we check, recheck and take one final look before we let it go! We are fully invested in our task at hand. Constantly striving to keep up with the newest in Pharmacy news from researching the literature, to attending CE's provided by our E&D department. The constant presence of students and Pharmacy Practice Residents keeps us on our toes through their questions and presentations.
What has surprised you the most about the support you've received as a Pharmacist?
The almost unanimous physician support! I feel for the most part that our physicians really trust their pharmacists and value their input.
