UAB Pharmacy

Technology

UAB Hospital is always progressing and evolving with advances in technology. We evaluate and utilize new technology which benefits our health care providers and encourages an environment that improves the safety of our patients.

Electronic Medical Record and CPOE
UAB has embraced technology with the goal of creating a complete electronic medical record. One beneficial component is the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) which has greatly enhanced pharmacy’s ability to provide safe and effective drug therapy in a timely fashion.
Automated Medication Management System (AMMS)
The primary medication distribution system used at UAB is the Automated Medication Management System (AMMS)/Pyxis, which utilizes 117 Pyxis Medstations through the UAB Hospital campus. This system also uses CII Safe as the primary distribution mechanism for controlled substances.

USP 797 Compliant Facility
The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) sets practice standards to help ensure that compounded sterile preparations are of high quality. UAB Hospital has a fully compliant USP 797 Sterile Product Facility within our state-of-the-art Central Pharmacy.
